Introduction

Salt Lake County is the most populous county in the state, with an estimated population of 996,374 for 2006. Salt Lake County had the second highest population increase in the state with 18,089. The county's average annual growth rate from 2005 to 2006 has been 1.8%, below the state average of 2.4%. Salt Lake County's average household size is 2.90 people per household compared to the state average of 3.07 people per household (Census estimates 2005). The median age in the county is 28.5. (2005 Baseline Projections, Governor's Office of Planning & Budget). Salt Lake County is expected to grow to a population of 1,383,907 by the year 2030.

Utah ranks sixth among the 50 states in population growth with a rate of 2.4 percent.  The U.S. rate of growth was only 1 percent. The total population in Utah increased by 67,740 persons from 2005 to 2006. Utah still has the highest birth rate in the nation. The other component of growth was in-migration.

Agriculture: Agricultural production in Salt Lake County will continue to decrease as urbanization of the county converts agricultural lands into residential, retail and industrial uses.  However, in 2006, there was a higher demand for grain as a source of energy, especially corn for the production of ethanol.

Construction: In 2006, Salt Lake County reported 4,800 residential building permits, the second highest in the state. By the end of September 2006, nonresidential construction grew to $503.1 million in 2004. Several large projects were approved by the end of the year in Salt Lake County including a $63.6 million LDS Church History Library and the $1.8 billion City Creek Center (a mixed use center in downtown Salt Lake City).  Another large project scheduled to come online in 2007 is the new Regional Intermountain Medical Center located in Murray City. IKEA will also open their 310,000 sq. ft. retail store in Draper by the spring of 2007.

Retail Sales: Total taxable retail sales in Salt Lake County were estimated to be $20 billion in 2006. It is estimated that taxable sales will increase by over 6 percent statewide.

Land Ownership: Fifth smallest in land area, Salt Lake County covers 481,927 acres of land. Of this total acreage, 77.8% is owned privately or by the local government, 21.8% is federally owned, and 0.4% is state owned.
