Dentistry Stays in the Family

Sperry Dental

When it comes to selecting dental care, there are certainly a lot of options from which to choose. But few, if any, dental offices have the experience or skill of Sperry Dental. Located at 2000 East 1300 South in Sugar House, Sperry Dental has been around since Edmund T. Sperry opened a practice in 1944 in downtown Salt Lake City. Sperry Dental, which is now co-owned by Edmund’s son Steven and grandson Jeffrey, has been in Sugar House since 1992.

“Our length of time in the practice -- our continuity is an advantage,” says Dr. Jeffrey Sperry. “My father and I grew up around dentistry. Everything we do stems from that.”

Jeffrey graduated from Nova Southeast University Dental School in 2007; Steven got his dental degree from Washington University of St. Louis in 1983.

Sperry Dental sees patients of all ages -- from “children to grandparents,” as Jeffrey says -- and treats a wide range of dental needs such as cleanings, x-rays, gum disease, crowns, bridges, root canals and cosmetics. The office is even open to patients with emergencies 24 hours a day.

“I get a lot of late calls,” Jeffrey says.
Among the most popular services and those that bring Jeffrey the most satisfaction in providing are the cosmetic procedures. These include repairing crooked or damaged teeth with porcelain veneers. Jeffrey says patients’ lives and self-images have been improved with these procedures.

“These can make a big difference in someone’s life,” he says. “It’s been rewarding to be able to do that. I had a patient in her 60s with crooked teeth reward herself with six veneers. It made all the difference in the world to her. She said she wished she would’ve had it done 40 years before.”

Sperry Dental also strives to make unpleasant experiences, such as having root canals, a little less uncomfortable.

“We have a lot of tricks to make it more tolerable,” Jeffrey says. “We do one simple procedure that fixes the problem for good. We use antibiotics before the anesthetic.”

Perhaps the most significant different between Sperry Dental and other dentists is the office’s commitment to one-on-one time with patients. While most dentist offices use hygienists to handle the cleaning, x-rays and other basic procedures, before the dentist comes in for a few minutes at the end of the visit to evaluate the patient, Jeffrey doesn’t work with a hygienist, allowing him to get to know the patients’ needs better.

“We pay attention to detail,” he says. “Time with patients is important. This gives me more time to talk to patients about all level of care.”

The office is open Monday through Friday, except Wednesdays, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For additional information, please call the office at 801-484-8893 or visit the website at www.sperrydental.com.
